Enríquez Gómez, Antonio, 1600-1663
The Perfect King / El rey más perfecto
The political and religious dissident Antonio Enríquez Gómez wrote The Perfect King (c. 1656) under the pseudonym Fernando de Zárate while living in Seville as a fugitive from the Inquisition. The play deals with major episodes in the life of King Fernando III "el Santo" of Castile-León, who conquered Seville from the Muslims in 1248, presenting Fernando as the model of everything a monarch should be, and thereby implying strong criticism of Enríquez’s own contemporary king, Philip IV.
